I only pretended to be famous for 5 seconds but it made them laugh. They didn't have long to wait for the real stars - Kate and William. I was delighted to purchase this painting at @theartacademylondon auction this week for my personal collection in support of their fundraising. By artist @roxanahalls this painting sums up pretty much how I felt for many years - my world turned upside down, not knowing which was was what, no longer having my feet on the ground and mostly only seemingly being of use when my skirts were over my head. Life has subsequently righted itself and gratefully I am, for the moment, back on terra firma, the dress is firmly pulled down and the blood is no longer rushing to my head - but I am going to look at this painting everyday and remember we are all, whether we like it or not, only one ceiling away from feeling like this, from our lives being in a topsy turvy state of change and we must all be grateful and celebrate those moments of relative calm when we can feel the grass between our toes. 🙏

God I LOVE my job. Grey day and I have a cup of tea, a cinnamon bun from Gails and I am installed at my desk researching First Nation artists for a new client I have just taken on - it doesn't get much better than this. Awwwwwwww what a small world it is. Last night I was kindly invited to speak on a panel @woldinghamsch about careers in the creative arts. It turns out that one of the school's alumni is @eleanormaywatson - an artist I bought for clients and for myself at her BA degree show back in 2012. I have continued to follow her quiet and absolutely beautiful work - her recent show @fbafutures being her strongest to date. Such a bonus to know she is a Woldingham girl. For any followers with creative girls out there - the art department at Woldingham IS one of the strongest I have ever seen (thanks to @lottie.reay and her team) blowing away the competition when I looked round. Brilliant turn out last night and as inspiring for me to hear the other clever women on the panel @annamasonlondon @samanthachitty @clukinmarvelous (Sian O'Shea) @lottie.reay Natashka Cheetham and Stacey Williams. Our girls perhaps don't realise what a lucky start they have. .

Can't stop thinking about this lovely painting I saw two weeks ago at London Art Fair. Can't quite work out what it is, but it feels like a lot of things: a rock, stones, primitive sculpture, stonehenge, a tortoise, a landscape, a portrait, a car, a symbol, something strong, something sinister, something not sinister, something going somewhere, something static, something transient, something eternal - well I could go on and on - but there is definitely something deep going on. And I love its quietness. I love that. 🙏

I have adored James's work for more years than I care to admit and so am delighted and quite honestly, honoured to be showing these works at the Affordable Art Fair with my business partner Suzie through my other business @surfaceica. I sneaked a peak for a client and she immediately bought the one I had on approval. DM me if you want to go on the waiting list for the next available work. Every woman needs one of these in her dressing room in my view. And if you don't have a dressing room anywhere else will do. Brilliant technical work that blows you away (it's all done with a Bic biro!), makes you laugh and makes you think about the slightly fucked up consumerist society we all live in today. It ticks all my boxes. .

These lucky ducky clients have a wonderful flat that has ceilings over 3 metres high. So how do you find work for the room that holds the space? A landscape piece would cut the room in two and we'd spend all our time looking at the swathes of ceiling above it. One large portrait piece may well have felt too imposing for the room which, although it had huge ceilings, wasn't enormous in itself. My solution was to a large diptych - it gives and plays to the height of those lovely ceilings and yet avoids one imposing large painting that might feel it can topple onto us. If you would like some ideas for your space - I charge £150 for 10. I'll be uploading this client's reference today on my website - they kindly described my help as 'invaluable'. 😊 Thank you to the fabulous @penmaninteriors for recommending me to her clients. .

London Art Fair this week and from the previews it looks like it's going to be a strong fair. I'm especially excited to see the solo presentation of Scottish artist Pat Douthwaite (1934-2002). I fell in love with her (often seemingly tortured) mark making more years ago than I care to admit and will always be grateful to Christina from @scottishgallery for taking me under her wing one day and showing me all Douthwaite's works that they had in storage abd my love affair with this artist began right there. The work can be difficult so my advice is to start with one of the works on paper and work up from there! There is a lecture on 23 January • 1.30 - 2.15pm • RSVP essential - see there!

I couldn't take my eyes off these balls pressing into this woman's cheeks at the Rembrandt show. It turns out these are the ends of Dutch 'ear irons' or oorizers - the metal hand band that keeps the woman's cap on but I can't shake them out of my head. How can this possibly be comfortable? It looks, in fact, positively uncomfortable? I am interested in the massive attention to detail and, in some ways, this has been so lovingly painted. Why such big indents? I've googled other images of these torturous things and hardly anyone else drills them quite into the face like Rembrandt here. Unlikely to be an artist comment that these are a symbol of women's constant shackling and subjugation in society? Possibly more a comment on the ageing and sagging of the woman's face (perhaps a younger skin would not give in quite so easily against those balls). Or maybe Rembrandt was just painting what he saw and it is only now, with through the lens of feminism that I layer on these additional possible interpretations. Whatever the answer I can't stop looking at this. Go see more amazing painting and beautiful lighting at this beautifully curated show in Dulwich.

Holy moly. It's not often these days a painting shoots me between the eyes. But here it is. 1840. Bright and fresh as anything I've seen in recent years. The horse is wrong somehow, but right because of it. Too short legs? Too long tail? Too small head? But what do I know? Nothing. @cazchalkley and @sarahday_wiggs will be able to advise. All I can say is read the endearing catalogue description and that this painting deserves to go to its next home. Adorable. I'm so on the cusp of buying a house in the country anyway - I might have to start with the art first.

In another part of my life I learned the importance of a daily gratitude list so I just wanted to finish this year with one on here. Thanks to all my wonderful clients, friends, clients who become friends (so far you all seem to!), professionals from other fields who recommend me, artists who work with me, galleries who I work with, framers, hangers, art transporters and of course my kids who are in their 12th to 16th year of being dragged round art galleries, degree shows and anything arty of every kind. I am so so so grateful to you all enabling me do a job l adore. I am especially thankful to those of you who recommend me. I sometimes think I wouldn't have a single client if you weren't all out there putting a word in, recommending me and generally telling people 'that they should talk to Lou if they want some art or need some advice' and I have been truly humbled this year with how much of my business has come from personal recommendations. Thanks to all the artists and gallerists for such a fabulous day in Margate this week. Here is the glorious work of Sophie von Hellermann. Standing in front of this yellow one (shown at the brilliant @newgategap ) I honestly felt like standing in front of an altar. I swear this painting has a spiritual light emanating out of it and had the room not been full of people I may well have got on my knees and said a little prayer of thanks in front of it. The second painting felt different entirely. About 'the pig that never gets the truffles', it tied in with a much broader discussion I had had with my friend and client on and off all day about the stage in life we are at. In our early 40's we thought, naively, that once we were at the stage we are now we would have all the truffles - and yet now as we march on towards 50, many of us have found that life has thrown a spanner or two or three in the works and we are dealing with relationship issues, family issues, work issues or the worst of them all, health issues. So I look again at these two paintings of Sophies and I see two things: one a work of utter truth and realistic painful honesty - we never get to have all the truffles in life but the other - there remains bright yellow swirls of joy and hope and glory despite all that. It was an honour to have seen these works of great, quiet and profound thoughtfulness. .

This is Arun quite rightly looking on with awe at this incredible Gill Rocca moments after this painting has been installed. It took these clients nine months of learning, going to exhibitions and artist studios with me before they were confident enough to know an amazing painting when they saw one. But boy once they had their eye in, did we source some absolutely astonishing things. I love my job. I found this project immensely rewarding and loved watching these clients grow and develop their taste and engage with the art world. Thanks to all the gallerists and artists that spent time with us on that journey.
