How I Give Back

Clients often ask about creating gallery walls but really the secret is to buy what you love and then it always kind of works. Here is a gallery wall I put together for myself on Saturday night! I love every single piece on these walls and for very different reasons.

It’s the second year I’ve taken these lovely clients on a walk round Frieze and I literally could have burst with pride watching them interact with works and galleries and listening to all their stories about all the art places they have been to. The knowledge and confidence they have gained in the last two years since we first came is really impressive. Sometimes I think I love finding the perfect the work for the space, but today I realised I love bringing clients into this bonkers place people call The Art World and watching them learn to fly on their own. And like many of my clients that I work with over periods of time, it does not take long before I learn as much from them as they do from me. Today was no exception. If you would like a tour of an art fair it costs £250. For existing clients who teach me as much as I have ever taught them, it’s free.

Looking for an artist who can do beautiful drawings of homes. I know you are out there - just can’t lay my hands on your details. Please DM me :)

So great to be back at an art fair. Loved meeting the gals @redarrowgallery and the artist @briannabass in the Young Gallery section of @thearmoryshow.

A huge thanks to @celiapym for a magical three day course @westdeancollege. You were asked to bring something personal to work on. I brought a scarf that I bought for my ex husband many moons ago. I thought he looked terribly dashing and erudite in it - I think mainly because it was 100% cashmere from @paulsmithdesign you know 😉. Several years later I had learnt that whilst Paul Smith is clearly erudite, wearing his scarf does not maketh the man and the scarf had become a metaphor for our relationship - full of holes, tears and rents. I decided to repair the scarf in the same way as my life since being married to my ex-husband has repaired - and to bring the scarf back in line with that - darn full of joy and love. A huge thanks to the wonderful women on this course with whom we shared side splitting laughter, quiet contemplation while stitching and all whilst putting the world rights. Thanks mostly though to Celia who was the most inspirational, kind and wonderful teacher.

Last day today at the dreamy @heckfield_place. Please see link in bio for some more details about this lovely hotel, its elegant art collection and its wonderful staff.

My clients and I loved simple beauty of this work (reframed to fit the space with a delicious curved edged to pick up the thoughtful detailing in the joinery). The perfect complement to the pared back style of this super dressing room put together so elegantly by @colour_interiors_ltd . A tulip is also a nod to the roof garden outside and a perfect balance of the masculine and feminine. 10 ideas for your space cost £250.

Nothing like bumping into an artist @alicecescattiartist at the train station to remind yourself of some of the lovely placements you’ve done of her work. I have no idea how this beauty in a scheme from @colour_interiors_ltd never made it on here. This is from several years ago now and I’d make the same choice of work for this space still. If you’d like 10 ideas for you space it costs £250.

I loved this classy bedroom designed by @penmaninteriors the minute I saw it but I loved even more that the client knew exactly what they wanted ‘a beautiful nude above the bed’. Finding a beautiful nude is an oddly hard thing to find - the balance between reverence to the woman from the (usually male) artist and it just having enough frisson to be sexy without being exploitative. This one from @markdemsteader is on point. If you would like 10 ideas for a space it costs £250.

@carolrobertson.artist captures complex feelings and experiences of place in her paintings - distilling them down to beautiful abstractions. This work called love was painted at a time of an important wedding anniversary. I have always loved that there is some pink and black in there. I never wanted to asked whether the black represented the solidity of the marriage or was kind of like the peat layer that held all the gentler feelings on top. Or whether it was like a dissection cross section of the marriage - and that like all marriages I expect it was some pink fluffy cloud days and some darker ones although this one seems gilded in a golden halo. I don’t care what the answer is. I have always adored this painting as for me it doesnt paint love as entirely sweet and saccharine. You do love, we do love, one does love in nuances. There is even a bit of grey in there if you look hard. Yes love can be grey too. A huge thanks to @colour_interiors_ltd and @adearchitecture for yet another amazing space and scheme to work with.

As I make my way back down to my London life today I just wanted to do a shout out to the amazing Robbie who has set up one of the most deliciously curated art, crafts and interior spaces I have been to in a long time. His passion for every single one of the pieces that he has picked and his knowledge and love for each of the artists or crafts men and women who made them shone through. Visiting him was a real highlight of my trip up here in the North York Moors and I highly recommend a trip to visit him in the lovely @nunningtonstudios (fab coffee shop there too! @theoldyardcoffeeshop)
